Sustainable Tourism Initiative “Taking the Hospitality Sector on the Climate Journey”

Indonesia Global Compact Network (IGCN) together with the UN Global Compact Local Networks of Mauritius & Indian Ocean RegionMexicoPortugal and as well as Switzerland & Liechtenstein have launched a webinar series focused on climate change and limit carbon emissions with the aim to make the tourism sector a driving force for sustainable and responsible business by 2025.

The Webinar Series aims to set up a sustainability initiative in tourism within the UN Global Compact, identify participants needs in terms of community building and practical support by the Local Networks, and to integrate the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact along the whole tourism/hospitality value chain to make a positive contribution to tackling climate change and limit carbon emissions, targeting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The three-part Webinar Series enables the industry players to:

  • benefit from peer-to-peer exchange, which enables them to take decisions for asustainable recovery or development of their company
  • gain knowledge on how to transition towards net-zero
  • have access to an international network of peers and experts onsustainable tourism
  • be part of a pioneering and reputation-building initiative within the UN Global Compact

The first webinar, held on June 8th 2022, was opened with a welcome statement from Mr. Sandiaga Uno, Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy of Indonesia and had “The big picture on Tourism, carbon footprint and climate change” presented by Emily McLeish (Head of Communications- Sustainable Hospitality Alliance) and Lígia Ramos (Engagement Coordinator, SBTi/Global Compact Network Brazil).

The second session of this initiative, held on June 22nd 2022, was opened by Jeremy Sampson (CEO-The Travel Foundation), followed by Shannon Guihan (Chief Sustainability Officer-Travel Corporation), Fabrizio Orlando (Global Industry Relations Associate Director-Tripadvisor), and A.B. Sadewa (Corporate Secretary & Investor Relations – PT Panorama Sentrawisata Tbk), who presented their insights on Drivers and Obstacles for the hospitality sector to reach net-zero.

As a response to the first two webinars of the initiative, the participants players of the tourism industry, expressed their commitment to more sustainable practices relying on the Glasgow Declaration, while stressing on the necessity of uniting the value chain to drive progress at speed and at scale to make the Agenda 2030 possible.

The 3rd webinar of this series will be held on July 6th 2022 and will present “The company perspective: Strategies and measures towards a net-zero hospitality sector”
