To promote the importance of business and human rights issues in Indonesia, Indonesia Global Compact Network (IGCN) in collaboration with The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union (EU), International NGO Forum on Indonesian Development (INFID), and facilitated by OXFAM GB in Indonesia, held a Regional Workshop on Business and Human Rights on 5-6 February 2018. This workshop was aimed to enforce Multi-stakeholders cooperation in the implementation of the United Nations Guiding Principles (UNGPs) on Business and Human Rights (B&HR) in Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia.
This workshop was conducted following the Jakarta International Conversation (JIC) on Human Rights led by The Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It was held in the occasion of the 70th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as well as the visit of the United Nations High Commissioner of Human Rights, H.E. Zeid Ra’ad Al Husein, who came under the invitation of The Government of Indonesia. JIC was intended to evaluate the current stage of the promotion and protection of human rights in the region as well as to explore and share best practices and lessons learned, in overcoming challenges and advancing cooperation of human rights.

Mr. Y.W. Junardy, IGCN President, in his opening remarks at the Regional Workshop on B&HR, highlighted the importance of respecting and supporting human rights as one of the most fundamental areas of corporate sustainability. In the same opportunity, Mr. Charles-Michel Geurts representative of the EU Delegation to Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam conveyed that Business and Human Rights issues have become one of the EU’s top priorities. It was conveyed that all parties involved in the workshop were relevant stakeholders to implement the UNGPs on B&HR. The EU also plays an active role in applying these principles through the Human Rights Guides for Business System.

In this two-day workshop, IGCN also invited other regional Local Network from Thailand, represented by Mr. Netithorn Praditsarn, Deputy Secretary General, Global Compact Network Thailand, who was at “Best Practice from Private Sector in Advancing UNGPs on B&HR” session, and Ms. Yayu E. Javier, Chairperson, Global Compact Network Philippine who shared at “Addressing Gender Rights in Advancing UNGPs on BHR” session.

Not only we engaged other regional Local Network to participate, we also brought our Board members into this Regional Workshop, among others, Ms. Yanti Triwadiantini, Advisor, Indonesia Global Compact Network, who moderated “Best Practice from Private Sector in Advancing UNGPs on B&HR” session, and at the last session Ms. Librian Angraeni, Deputy Director of Sustainability & Stakeholder Engagement, Asia Pulp Paper participated in the discussion about “Improving The 3rd Pillar of UNGPs, Access to Remedy”.

This forum was served as a Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue medium for networking, knowledge sharing and exchange of experience on business and human rights practices and the implementation of the UNGPs on B&HR. About more than 200 representatives from IGCN members, corporations, civil society organizations, trade unions, academia, and representatives of ASEAN governments from Singapore, Malaysia, Philippine, Thailand, Vietnam, and The Netherlands participated in this forum.
The participants were expected to have gained updates on the adoption of UNGPs on Business and Human Rights in Southeast Asia, ASEAN Regional strategy on B&HR, best practice case from private sector in advancing UNGPs on B&HR, gender rights on B&HR, and from the deep discussion about UNGP’s 3rd Pillar, Access to Remedy.
