United Nations Guiding Principles (UNGPs) on Business and Human Rights introduce a new approach that replaces the naming and shaming campaign. It endorses new rules of the game, namely the “Knowing and Showing” approach whereby companies are proactively taking preventative steps before any harm occurs within their operations. It starts with a commitment by companies to respect human rights, followed by assesment, and establishment of remediation.
“We accentuate encouragement rather than discouragement for companies,” Josephine Satyono, Executive Director of IGCN said.
In Indonesia, IGCN, Oxfam, and INFID are in joint effort in promoting business that respect human rights. The 3rd Multi-stakeholders dialogue, as one of the project activities, took place on 14 March 2017 at Ministry of the Foreign Affairs office, Jakarta.
The main agenda of the dialogue was to share good practice from the business side on “Knowing and Showing from Business that Respect Human Rights”, delivered by Willemijn de longh, Policy Advisor Climate, Forests & Agriculture Oxfam Netherlands.
The dialogue was attended by 60 participants from government, business, CSO, labor union, and academia.
The next MSHD is scheduled to take place in June 2017. Be alerted on this event, which we will announce through IGCN website calendar of events.
