Multi-stakeholders Dialogue on Business&Human Rights:CRBP Implementation in Sustainable Supply Chain

Oxfam in Indonesia (Oxfam), International NGOs Forum on Indonesian Development (INFID) and Indonesia Global Compact Network (IGCN) are in collaboration to run European Union (EU) funded program titled “Walking the Talk: Promoting Accountable Business through Advancement of United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) Implementation in Indonesia”. This 3 (three) years program aims at:

1. Promoting an accountable business sector in Indonesia that adopts corporate responsibility to respect human rights, and
2. Building awareness and capacity of labour and farmer unions, CSOs, and the Indonesian business sector to advance UNGPs implementation in the agriculture/food industry, especially in the palm oil plantation sector.

IGCN carries out three main activities; (i) training to managerial level of private sectors, (ii) conducting quarterly multi-stakeholders dialogue and (iii) setting up Business and Human Rights Helpdesk. In this context, multi-stakeholders dialogue will be facilitated by Business & Human Rights Working Group (B&HRWG) that includes private sectors, CSO, and government. These activities aims at creating space for multi-stakeholders dialogue, knowledge & experience sharing, and possibility forming collaboration among stakeholders.

Previously, IGCN held three Multi-stakeholders Dialogue on Business & Human Rights:

1. Multi-stakeholders Dialogue series on Business & Human Rights – series 1 :“Knowledge Sharing and Recent Updates on UNGPs: Indonesia and Global” –  Introduction with Global Expert
2. Multi-stakeholders Dialogue series on Business & Human Rights – series 2 :“Result of the Baseline Study on the Implementation of United Nations Guiding Principles (UNGPs) on Business and Human Rights in Indonesia”
3. Multi-stakeholders Dialogue series on Business & Human Rights – series 3 : “Knowing and Showing from Business that Respect Human Rights”

The upcoming Multi-stakeholders Dialogue series on Business & Human Rights – series 4 “Children’s Rights and Business Principles (CRBP) Implementation in Sustainable Supply Chain” will be focused on sustainable supply chain related to UNGPs on Business and Human Rights. Sourcing strategy will cover raw materials, including palm oil, cocoa, coffee, peanuts, tea and mint. How company did their best effort to make sure no human rights violations by their supply chain, including ensures respected and protected human rights including children’s rights?

Suppliers are required to respect human rights and comply to principles in UN Declaration of Human rights. Moreover, accept and support basic labour rights as stated in International Labour Organization (ILO). Workers have the right to work, freedom of choice, to work without any discrimination, and have the right to equal pay for equal work. Workers have the right to social protection. Workers have the right to form and to join trade unions.

Hosted by Teach for Indonesia (TFI) of Binus University, the dialogue will be held with the following main agenda:

1. Welcoming speech from Johan S.Kom., M.M., Vice Rector – Student Affairs & Community Development of Binus University
2. Sharing of recent Report and publication on “Palm Oil and Children in Indonesia: Exploring The Sector’s Impact on Children’s Rights” by Sagita Adesywi, Partnerships (CSR) Officer – Children’s Rights and Business Principles of UNICEF Indonesia.
3. Sharing Session by Cargill Indonesia on the UNGPs implementation on Business and Human Rights in the Supply Chain by Colin Lee, Corporate Affairs Director of Cargill Tropical Palm.
4. Sharing of academia’s point of view on the UNGPs implementation on Business and Human Rights in the Supply Chain by Dr. Ahmad Sofian, S.H., M.A.,  SCC Fundamentals of Business Law from Binus University.
5. Multi-stakeholders Dialogue: discussion, Q&A to share views, improved understanding, and recommendations from participants based on the result of the sharing knowledge by the experts, policy makers and private sectors. Moderated by Ravin Trapshah Ismail, Senior Manager – Sustainability & Stakeholder Engagement of Asia Pulp and Paper (APP Group)
