“Accelerating Effective Children Education Programs through Teaching Transformation in Indonesia During and Post-COVID Era (SDG 4)”

BACKGROUND

Education enables upward socioeconomic mobility and is a key to escaping poverty. Over the past decade, major progress was made towards increasing access to education and school enrollment rates at all levels, particularly for girls. Nevertheless, about 260 million children were still out of school in 2018 — nearly one fifth of the global population in that age group. And more than half of all children and adolescents worldwide are not meeting minimum proficiency standards in reading and mathematics.

Due to COVID-19 pandemic, 80 million children and adolescents in Indonesia are facing a widespread secondary impact on their learning, health, nutrition and economic security. With more than half a million early childhood centres, schools and universities closed, the average time spent on distance learning has varied from only 2.2 to 3.5 hours per day around the country. School closures have also increased the risk of school dropout, putting out-of-school children at greater risk of child marriage and other harmful and exploitative practices. Similarly, the disruption of daily routines has affected the mental and emotional well-being of young people. Nearly half of all households have reported child behavioural challenges, with children finding it hard to concentrate (45 per cent), becoming angrier (13 per cent) and finding it difficult to sleep (6.5 per cent).

This situation shows that the acceleration to achieve SDG 4 is urgently needed. Education is crucial for skills/competence and character development for the achievement of sustainable development. Investing in education is not only to address SDG 4, but also very important to address the other SDGs simultaneously. Education should be oriented toward character building of the students in addition to technical competence. It is needed for decent job creation, developing environment-friendly production and consumption, inclusive economy and better quality of life.

We should transform the way we teach the students by including character building (8Cs) and also embed SDGs in the curriculum at an early stage of education in order to “implant” the SDGs DNA. The current “Merdeka Belajar”(Freedom to Learn) launched by the Minister of Education, Culture, Research & Technology is a strategic opportunity in supporting and implementing SDGs as the “north star”.

1. Sharing experience and exchanging insights on education transformation in Indonesia.
2. Promoting the education sector to accelerate SDGs achievement.
3. Promoting engagement and partnership in enhancing quality education.
