Empowering the Visually Impaired for Inclusive Employment in Southeast Asia

In celebration of International Disability Day this December, UN Global Compact Network Indonesia (IGCN) proudly supports the Research Report on Employment of Persons with Visual Impairment by Yayasan Mitra Netra. Backed by The Nippon Foundation, this study examines key factors affecting the employment of visually impaired individuals in Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam.

Based on responses from 196 visually impaired individuals, the report brings light on internal and external factors influencing employment outcomes, such as soft skills, workplace inclusivity, and family support. It highlights the growing presence of visually impaired individuals, particularly women, in formal employment sectors like education and social services, while noting persistent challenges in technology-related fields.

Key findings underscore the need for improved workplace accommodations, consistent enforcement of disability employment policies, and specialized training programs to develop essential skills, including non-verbal communication and resume writing. The study also advocates for creating employer forums to break stereotypes and promote inclusivity.

The next step is to focus on accelerating the implementation of existing regulations to ensure greater workforce inclusion for visually impaired individuals. In Indonesia, a key priority is enforcing the mandates on the employment of people with visual impairments as outlined in Indonesia Law Number 8 of 2016 and its by-laws. Yayasan Mitra Netra hopes this study will drive the effective and optimal application of labor regulations, particularly those aimed at supporting visually impaired workers.

This International Disability Day, let us celebrate the abilities of visually impaired individuals and support their meaningful inclusion in the workforce, strengthening communities and driving economic growth.
