Coaching Clinic 2 – Creating a Safe, Fair, and Decent Work Environment

The second Coaching Clinic of the SDG16 Business Framework series: Inspiring Transformational Governance was held on 28th of Mar 2023, under the theme of Creating a Safe, Fair, and Decent Work Environment: Sustainability Reporting and Impact Assessment for Human Rights. Opened with a speech from Dr. Dhahana Putra, as the Acting Director General of Human Rights, Directorate General of Human Rights, Ministry of Law & Human Rights RI, the event was continued by the first presentation from Mr. Hendri Yulius Wijaya from PWC Indonesia, bringing the topic of Human Rights Impact Assessment (HRIA). In his presentation, Mr. Wijaya introduced the definition of HRIA, as the potential company risk management. Under the three main pillars of UNGP, Mr. Wijaya explained the implementation of HRIA framework and its difference with the Social Compliance Audit, and  as well as the salience assessment for companies. 

The next speaker,  Ms. Daniele Coronacion from GRI discussed how to Disclose Human Rights Performance in Sustainability Reporting. She described the current GRI sustainability reports standards applied to the human rights disclosure, within the certain guidance and requirements.

The last speaker was Mr. Tom Malik from the PT. Merdeka Copper Gold Tbk. He presented the Human Rights in Practice under the SDG16 Business Framework, especially in the mining industry. Mr. Malik highlighted how respecting the Human Rights values within the internal operation of a company brought many benefits, and continuing to complete steps to fulfil human rights aspects in a preventive and future oriented manner. It is important for a company to create expectations and targets to develop standards and company policies.

The coaching clinics then continued to discuss several questions from the participants in the QnA session. Some of the questions highlight the importance of inclusivity, gender issue in the workplace, underpayment, challenges surrounding the human rights inside the company, and the building block phasing of sustainability from the framework of GRI.
