Ocean Sustainability Executive Dialogue

Ruang Rapat BSM, Kantor Bappenas. Jl. Taman Suropati No.62 Jakarta 10310
Organized by OSC IGCN

Overview

The Ocean Centres initiative hosted by the UN Global Compact and supported by the Lloyd’s Register Foundation has been set up in seven countries – Brazil, Ghana, Kenya, India, Bangladesh, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Each centre, strategically located to address regional safety challenges, will play a vital role in fostering collaboration between governments, industry leaders, and maritime communities. The initiative will foster locally led solutions to the challenges that are to be found in each of the regions.

Building on this, they aim to promote responsible business practices in ocean-based economies and influence the creation of new standards and policies.

The Ocean Centres were established through a partnership between the UN Global Compact (UNGC), a leading advocate for sustainability in the private sector, and Lloyd’s Register Foundation, a global charity dedicated to engineering a safer world. They are implemented through UNGC Country Networks in seven nations identified by local experts during the initiative’s scoping phase: Brazil, Ghana, Kenya, India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

Aligned with the global call for better safety standards and sustainable practices, the Ocean Sustainability Executive Dialogue, hosted by UN Global Compact Indonesia (IGCN) Ocean Center, offers a strategic platform to bring together Knowledge Partners and Champion Companies in the development and implementation of the IGCN Ocean Centre. Over the past three months, IGCN Ocean Centre has engaged with 15 Knowledge Partners, including government bodies, intergovernmental organizations (IGOs), business associations, labor unions, and various stakeholders related to ocean safety, to gather valuable insights and expertise on ocean safety and sustainability. These Knowledge Partners have played an integral role in shaping the foundation of the IGCN Ocean Centre, offering critical guidance that will inform future actions and solutions. In contrast, the Champion Companies—key players expected to drive the project forward—have not yet been fully engaged.

The Ocean Sustainability Executive Dialogue presents the first opportunity for these Champion Companies to come together, collaborate, exchange expertise, and engage in discussions on ocean safety and sustainability. By joining the IGCN Ocean Centre, Champion Companies will not only contribute to shaping the future of the ocean economy but also gain maximum benefit in advancing their sustainability goals. As the project evolves into a locally-led initiative, Champion Companies will have a unique opportunity to play a crucial role, shaping solutions that are both impactful and tailored to the specific needs of the regions in which they operate, positioning themselves as key drivers of change in the sustainable ocean economy.
