LETTER FROM LEADERSHIP
The year 2023 marked the halfway point to the 2030 deadline for meeting the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Globally, only 15% of these goals were on track. Indonesia, however, is actually doing significantly better with 36% of the goals achieved or on track. This significant progress underscores the important role that the private sector has in contributing to SDG achievements in Indonesia. Guided by our 2023-2025 Strategy, IGCN has been actively leading and engaging the Indonesian private sector to advance collective actions across the SDGs. IGCN’s 2023 suite of programs were tailored to deliver impacts in creating an environmentally-conscious, future- ready, resilient, and inclusive business with a strong ethical compass and robust governance in Indonesia.
However, after the COVID-19 pandemic, Indonesia still faces several challenges in pursuing the SDG targets, such as climate change, food security, energy, water, and pollution, as well as increasing financing needs. The UN Global Compact and IGCN strongly believe that the private sector can play a strategic role in solving these challenges. With the Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) aspect increasingly becoming a board-level agenda, Indonesian companies are also on a constant lookout for ‘how-to’ support guides. Through IGCN’s 2023 capacity-building activities and following directives from the UN Global Compact on the implementation of the Ten Principles, we have been able to deliver actions to meet this need.
Thus, with the 2024 United Nations Summit of the Future on the horizon, the question of how we can work together effectively to meet those targets while preparing for a more resilient future needs to be urgently addressed. We believe that moving forward, with the rolling out of the Forward Faster initiatives from the UN Global Compact, IGCN can use the momentum to turbocharge SDGs achievements in Indonesia through a more transformative action in the private sector.
Finally, we would like to extend our gratitude to all of our stakeholders. We could not have achieved any of this work without our continuous collaboration. We would also like to thank our business members, who advocate and take action for responsible business, and thank members of the IGCN Board for their vital contributions to ensuring that business in Indonesia is a force for good.
Sincerely,
